My old laptop caught a serious virus leading to experimenting with ubuntu. I installed the latest version and have been playing around with it for about a month now.

I love the fact that you can get all the associated applications (think microsoft office) free as well as a multitude of other applications through the download portal. The platform itself seems to be very stable (no crashes or glitches) and runs pretty smoothly.

What I don't like is how S L O W it runs. It seems to me that it takes forever to load an app and navigate through app once it is loaded. Browsing the internet (using Firefox) is painfully slow as well. Firefox is there recommended browser.

I am seriously considering wiping the drive again and reinstalling windows just for the speed. Will keep firefox since I really like it better than IE.

Any one have any thoughts on ubuntu and if they are seeing it as slow as I am. My laptop is old but was not this slow with xp pro installed.

Just wondering out loud,,,,

Have had the same experience with "Ubuntu" , really like it but slower than XP-PRO.
I will keep it on the machine since I set it up as a "dule-boot" thing, just wish it were faster.

is it running processes you do not need?

Use the "top" command to see what processes are eating up the CPU. You'll have to look up "top" in the manual to see how to sort and display the data. It's likely different than in Red Hat that I am accustomed to.
