New handheld at MTC

I was at a tailgate sale today and the the guy from MTC (Richard) showed up with a new dual band handheld. Sale price $65.00 and that included cable and programming software. Nice looking little rig and it appears to do a full 5 watts. This thing is about throw away price. I've got a couple of Wousans, but at that price, I may have to have a spare.

I'm not sure which new HT you mean Doc. I've seen those little shirt pocket types. Only thing different is they do not have a tone pad on them. MTC has some good prices.

I'll do it Andy.... I would like to have one more, like Ken said to program in the FRS frequencies. That way I could have contact with the wife when we are out RV'ing. I could get a little better distance and more reliable then the FRS cheap-o's that I have now.

In the last 4 years, we have been through, I believe 3 sets of the box store FRS radios. They just do not hold up.

When I talked to Richard yesterday about the little HT's, he said that he had them custom made for MTC and they were part 90 certified. I keep one of my Wouxuns on the boat in my ditch bag and it gets a lot of abuse. Tomorrow, I'm going to call MTC and order one of these to put on the boat and if it gets ruined, I haven't lost much. The only thing that I'm not sure about is how to charge the battery. The model number on this thing is UV-E5 and he said it's 65 bucks and free shipping.

MTC is Main Trading Company. It's a ham store in Paris, TX. Pretty neat place with good prices.

I have a 16ft fresh water boat for bass fishing and fly fishing here on the Dead Lakes and Apalachicola River. I plan to carry my KV-UPD1P with me when out on the boat. With the new repeater in our little rural community and it linked via 220 MHz I can cover a large area from the little boat along the streams and river here.

Thanks guys... I like my little boat. It has stick steering, that's what a lot of people in our area use on the rivers, lakes and streams. The 60 hp Mercury really pushes it good. Faster than I really wish to run through these stumps. It's a great boat to bass fish and fly fish from.

Its none of my business, but I don't think that it is legal for FRS with a power output of more than one half of one watt into a non detachable antenna.

GMRS would require a license $85 for 5 years.
If I was going to spend $85 for a license, I wouldn't waste my time with a $65 handheld.
