OK, we now have two brand new forums on Open Roads Radio.net

Disaster Preparedness - Individual

This forum is for discussion of how to prepare yourself, your home and your family for whatever disaster would effect you personally. If you are not prepared then you can be of no assistance to others and may become a burden on local recovery efforts. Disaster preparation would include man-made, social or economic events as well as tornado, fire, drought, etc.

Disaster Preparedness - Community

This forum is for planning for the disaster that will eventually come to every community. Blizzard, earthquake, tornado and so on. Communities with a response plan fair much better that those who have none.

I don't feel these forums are off topic for ORR.net. We have communication skills and equipment. We have camping/survival gear. We are highly mobile. Many of us are LEO and ARES operators and involved with community service.

So let's prepare intelligently to be self reliant as individuals and communities for the inevitable disaster. As someone once said, "luck favors the prepared"

For both individual and community preparedness, we should consider the training provided by area CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) groups.
I belong to the Manchester, CT CERT, Our CERT team consists of the EmComm, Manchester Mountain Bike Search and Rescue (MBSAR) and CT Canine Search and Rescue (CCSAR) teams. Most of our members are ham radio operators and many of the EmComm members are qualified as topography navigators and boat operators for the CCSAR.
Contact your Fire Department or town Emergency Coordinator for information or do a Google search for CERT.

I am a CERT member as well. I decided to get licensed because of the need for emergency communications during a major event,. As a result I participate in our local radio club's ARES/RACES team. I agree that this topic is very appropriate here and look forward to learning and contributing.
