Ok I have a v8000 in the truck but I have been thinking about a cb for road knowledge.

Example today I was halfway between Memphis and Nashville and round the corner traffic STOPS. Seem there was a bad accident on 1-40 and traffic took 1 hour for a 5 mile trip.

My thought is if I use it only when needed as I hat the trash talk and thats why I grew up in the late 80's and got my ticket. But I am asking myself now that I am home.

If I had CB I could have flipped it on and made a 15 minute detour and bypassed the tragic scene.

So who still runs a CB after having the Ticket and yep I got it the hard way I had to learn the code.

Got my Novice long about 1967, back in the code days,, Got my Extra in 2006, Still needed 5wpm (they eliminated the code a few month later)

Got my first CB in 1977. Use it on long hauls. For the reasons you cite

I keep a CB and mag mount antenna under the back seat of the truck for those times when I might need it. wife has a cow about the truck having 3 antennas on it now and would really pitch a hissy about four.

On average there's much more traffic on CB than there ever is on 2 meter simplex, that's for sure.

I bought an antenna and radio for about $60 and put it on an existing mount, to heck with dignity - if I want help I want another person on the radio and Amateur in remote areas does not cut it, unfortunately.

I used to have both in the truck when I towed a 5th wheels.
Now I guess I am not in that big of a hurry anymore and I just don't care anymore. If I get stuck in traffic now it won't be often so I don't worry about it anymore.
I do have VHF/UHF as part of the FT-897 and I have a rig in the car we tow and an HT but I rarely turn them on other than if we are traveling with other hams.
My wife will get her tech shortly and when we are full time we will use simplex within the park when camp ground hosting to stay in touch.
We had CBs years ago to travel with friends before I got my Novice in the 1970s. At that time 2 meters was not an option with that license so I never got used to it.
Today to me it's the CB of ham and it just does not interest me much.

Well, the usefulness of 2-meters (and 70cm) depends a bit on where you are at

I understand in some parts of the country it's more or less gone the way of CB

In other parts it's still fairly good, In between.. Is, well..In between.

Alas, till the idiots who run our government figure out that an agent who can write 1,000 in fines for every 100 he gets paid is an INVESTMENT... We are going to continue down hill.

And once they DO figure it out... Count on the person who decries the "CB Like" nature of 2-meters in some parts of the country, and the need for more enforcement, THE LOUDEST!, as the one who gets the first Notice of Violation :)

Here it's OK and the repeaters are used very little.
But having traveled and monitored repeaters in the larger cities I am not interested at all.
Just not much into the local stuff.
Mainly HF ragchew. :)

Don't know about you guys ,but my 706 can receive only on non ham bands, so I keep it tuned to 27.185 channel 19...at least you can listen going down the road...other than that, get a cheap CB...I also use my 706 to listen to foreign broadcasts....works great for that...
