I had my Yaesu 857D on scan today (2/70 mtr) and heard a couple of RVers using 146.52. I was at my Home QTH and these folks were down the road from me about 15 miles. Nice hearing the frequency in use. I monitor it when rolling down the road in the RV or my POV.

I do, on very rare occasions hear things on 146.52... Once I heard someone calling me.. Took me some time to find the radio I leave on .52 though as.. Well.. I don't too often hear that one speak up :)

52 is still active, but you have to be in the right place at the right time. In my travels, I have talked to lots of hams on 52. We would usually QSY to another freq. to keep 52 open for contacts. It is a calling channel.

Years ago, I used to run between the Dallas area and the Houston area quite often. About half way, there was a rancher that monitored 52 and I would talk to him almost every trip. Helped fill in the time. His beam reached quite a way up and down interstate 45. I can't remember his call, been awhile. I probably couldn't remember it now even if I heard it 10 minutes ago (Hi Hi)

I always monitor 52 when on the road. I also have a dedicated radio for that purpose.

On a recent round trip from Amarillo to Dallas (TESSA Storm Spotter Conference in Colleyville) I called CQ on 146.520 every 10 miles by the odometer and finally made one contact with a station in Wichita Falls. I had a great QSO with K5WFT for about an hour into and out of Wichita Falls.

I was kind of surprised I heard a voice and looked over and my Yesau was off.. It did not sound like cb but they were off too..... OH.. It's the Wilson WE-800. (R-3) that is parked on 146.52. Second time in 5 years that's happened. ;)

You know... I got that Wilson 22 years ago.. And it still works... must be because my house is "NO SMOKING"

Texas must be a hotbed of .52 activity! I was travelling through Lubbock on i-27 earlier in the month and heard a K5 AND W6 having a local qso on .52! First activity I have heard in many months. YF was driving so I couldn't reach the rig at the time to join-in.

I guess we do use simplex fairly often here in Amarillo--a QSO can be heard daily on 146.520. Today I heard one side of a QSO on 446.000 from someone passing through town. That was rare!

The reason I leave one radio on 146.52 all the time is because when I see someone, epically someone with "Out of state" plates... Well... I think all hams with 2-mtrs in their rig should leave something even if it's only a hand held, on 146.52 Which is why I have 2 of them there most of the time. (one off)
