Radio and antenna depend on class of license.. But frankly you need to drop in on HRO or AES or Dayton Ham Vention (Best) or Orlando HamCation) Also good. and play with a few dozen radios.
For VHFUHF, I use Diamond dual banders
For HF I use a long wire, Most use Screwdrivers.
