Do you really mean to imply that the federal government has ever helped anybody with anything? Except, of course, the graft-takers (some 500-odd of them in Congress).

I'm not a strong admirer of organized religion, but churches, as groups of people, have always been the most reliably helpful institutions in times of disaster. That applies, too, to outfits like the Salvation Army, who have earned the respect, trust, and support that the Red Cross for example has not.
