On the dryer that came with the house I used to have I had two heat elements, when the active one developed an OPEN (Never a short) Id swap it with the spare, Drop the "Old" one at Detroit Edison appliance re-build center,, and a couple days later pick it up for the next time the element failed.. Very inexpensive.

All they did was replace the wire element (And on one occasion an insulator)
