Free Tech Class in Powder Springs, Georgia
I got this in a email today, if anyone is interested or can pass it on to others.
AMATEUR RADIO LICENSING CLASS
I will be teaching an Amateur Radio Licensing Class
for the Technician Level License. This is the
introductory level license.
Classes will be on three Saturdays,
September 13, 20 & 27 from 8am until 3pm.
You MUST attend all three classes to finish the course.
The class is free but there is a $15 fee to take the FCC Exam.
It is highly recommended that students purchase the
TECHNICIAN Instruction Manual
(effective July 1, 2014 through June 30, 2018)
You can get one from the American Radio Relay League
( www.arrl.org) or the Gordon West Manual from the W5YI
Group (www.w5yi.org)
These books are available from Amazon of Ham Radio Outlet
(www.hamradio.com) or at their store on Buford Highway
about 2 miles north of I-285, on the right.
For more information or to register, please contact:
ELDEN MORRIS, N1MN [email protected] or 770-713-4403
Classes will be held at American Legion Post 294, 3282 Florence Road, Powder Springs, GA 3012

Just out of curiosity... Where is Powder Springs?
I am officially in Townsend but it's closer for me to pick up mail in Darien (Exit 49 off I-95 about 3 miles to me or 2 (the other way) to the post office) .
Of course I do not need a Technician class since I passed that one back in 1968... (Extra now) but WE NEED MORE HAMS in this area. nearest repeater is ... OUT OF RANGE.

I wonder who sent you that email? I don't think Elden sent it to you. I assist Elden with the classes. He is a certified ARRL instructor as well as a Boy Scout merit badge instructor. He is a fellow VE that works with me every month for license testing also. This will be the second Tech class held this year. He will have a General license class later this year and the class for Amateur Extra is planned for next year. Anyone wishing to assist with the classes is welcome to join in. I will miss the first class this time since I will be at the Paulding ARC tailgate hamfest on the 13th of September www.pauldingarc.com and we will have license testing available to any attendee that wants a new license or upgrade. I believe this will be the 27th year for the tailgate hamfest. Not a large event but the price is right, "FREE".
A word of caution, the question pool for the Tech license has changed effective July 1, 2014 so make sure any study material reflects the new question pool. General class question pool will change next year (2015).

Powder Springs is where there's a big natural spring that, instead of water, spews gunpowder. It was very useful to the Confederacy, who got most of their gunpowder from Powder Springs.
Many place names in Georgia have interesting etymologies. Griffin, for example, is named after an animal (now extinct) which was a mix of a lion and an eagle. Thus the griffin was only one-half eagle, which is five dollars in gold. The study of zoology is full of surprises.*
* See Ambrose Bierce, The Devil's Dictionary, under "hippogriff".
