Default new gps and other info

Finally broke down and bought a refurb GPS to replace my 2008 or so unit. I no longer use wireless data to run the google maps on wife's IPHONE while we drive. Also solves any issues of trying to follow google maps directions which aren't the best sometime.

Price was right and it has the stuff I was looking for, especially a display of elevation as I drive ( personal quirk , can't really do anything with the info, just interesting to know)

I bought the Garmin Nuvi 2598 LMT HD, which comes with the Garmin Express app for the laptop.

Here is the interesting part. I have been looking for a road atlas that does not require internet connection ( like Microsoft streets and trips, which is no longer published.)

I'm not always at campgrounds with WiFi and my wireless data package isn't super big.

So, I noted that you can download the entire Garmin database to the laptop, thereby giving you a road atlas tool (including the million or so POI's) without internet.

As I plan trips and check mileage, don't always need a connection.

Just curious if anyone knows of another program similar to that.

What I found with Google Maps is they are technicially right but physically confusing.

For example in Fairplay SC (And about 1/2 mile from where I'm parked in GA) there are roads that make a half right turn.. If you go STRAIGHT you change roads and get to where you are going.. As you approach the interseciton Google Maps says "Turn left" WHich i9s TECHNICALLY what you are doing since you are changing roads.

But if you turn left in SC you go through a fence, and here, a ditch and forest beyond, Neither is designed for vehicle traffic. So you have to understand how computers think. OR rather do not think.

I agree, google maps on iPhone has taken us on goat trails (literally and figuratively) and caused not a little friction between driver (me) and navigator(wife).

therefore, a lot of the GPS purpose was related to friction reduction , wife happiness and lengthening of lifespan (mine). ha

I should call a guy I know who works for Garmin (I used to live in Olathe,KS) and see if he can explain how the algorithms work.
