Cool Fail to "see the humor"

Well, here's what happened to me in the last few days.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poster...ous_detachment

It's a bit scary to experience, especially if you are having a bout of high BP at the same time. All sorts of scary thoughts enter your mind about what might be going on.

Turns out, at least this time, there's not much to it.

I just have to keep an eye out for retinal tears.

The vitreous humor in you eye is inside a little bag, which as you age, can become detached. This can put on quite a light show inside your own head.
This is my first time through this as I have never been this old before. Eye guy said this happens to everyone, if they live long enough. It's just a matter of what might or might not happen to the retina.

Saw the eye guy this morning and it's OK, no retinal damage. If there had been damage, they'd have patched it up with a laser. Go back in a month for another look see. And if I get another "light show" I'll go running back to the eye guy, no appointment required.

Eeeyow. I have had a little of that in the past. Seems to have subsided now that I'm ancient (I have been on Earth more than half the years since Lincoln was assassinated).

I went to the link you provided but Wikipedia is hell bent on wanting money which I refuse to submit to so it looks like Wikipedia will have one less user.

The body doesn't fair well in old age. I had a recent blood test and was told I have decreased kidney function. Now I go to a Nephrologist for treatment although there is no real cure, just keep it from getting worse. Haven't got any real diagnosis yet, I go back to him next month, he indicated there may be an overdose of blood pressure medicine that can cause it so we will see.

Wade you haven't reached old age yet. I'm probably about the same age as Carl so if we have survived this long there is a good chance you will. Todays medicine can keep you going for quite a while.

Yah, me too. The strange thing is, they say I have decreased kidney function, but it seems to me that my kidneys function a heckuva lot more often than they used to.

They won't throw you out.

I get enough use out of Wikipedia to make it worth a few totally voluntary bucks yearly. I really like it that there aren't any dadgum ads on Wikipedia. So I happily sent them $20 last year and again last week. I've done the same for ORR on occasion, too.

Update on the Kidney problem. The Dr didn't seem to be too concerned (yet). Another blood test was done, the result was low on vitamin "D" so have pills for that, I have had swollen legs since I started on blood pressure medicine so got a water pill for that and a change to a smaller dose of one of the two blood pressure pills, then go back in 3 months. So there is a good chance I'll make it to at least 80, my sister is 84.

UPDATE: Went back for a follow up visit today. Dr. Tucker, (really nice guy, BTW) found a small tear in the retina Generally this is cause for great alarm but the tear is so small it may not require treatment, but he wants a retina specialist to make that decision.

I have a no-rush appointment with Georgia Retina next Thursday. They will either tack it back up with a laser or do nothing at all.

We'll see. (pardon the pun)

OK, I done with the retina guy. They did decide to use the laser.

It was a somewhat unpleasant experience, something like trying to pop your eye out of it's socket with a Popsicle stick while watching some one arc weld right in front of your nose.

They patched up two tears. This will not improve vision (much, if any) but it keeps the retina from falling off the inside of the eyeball. Sort of like a series of little spot welds. Preventing further retina damage is the point. Mission accomplished.

With both eyes dilated and one rather sore, it being very bright and cold outside, my schedule calls for lunch, a little Advil and a long nap.

Hello Chief. Sorry to read of your eye problems. I am replying because it would seem that I am an "expert" on retinal detachments having had three of them! No, I only have two eyes! LOL
Not really an expert mind you...just feel like one after all my issues. Took quite awhile but I can still manage a 20/25 corrected. Anyway, my purpose is to let you know of my experiences (also with GREAT group of specialists in Columbia, SC) and if you have questions about "goings on" in your eye, if I can offer similar experience I will be glad to...FWIW. Yes, the lightning is quite an eye opener...pun intended.
Yes, been through that Hell 3 times and the first one was a "giant tear" they patched up, a couple years later the the other eye...twice in short order. Have you had any cataract surgery? I had had it done a few years before the retinal stuff happened. It's thought that doing that exacerbates the probability of detachments. I cannot disagree.
Anyway...not to bore you...but if I may help just let me know. BTW, I don't visit here as much as I should but I'm good on QRZ.
Regards, Bill

Now retired and paying much more attention to care of my eyes!

Thanks, Bill.

My "risk indicators" are I'm over 60 and once (Pre-Lasik) had nearsighted corrections of greater than 6.0. Mine were 8.25 and 8.75. No cataracts.

I follow up on 1/19 and hopefully things will be OK. I just wish the blasted floaters would go away.

Very good Radio. Just watch those floaters (figuratively speaking) and if they persist you know who to tell! They usually dissolve after a while...but lots of them or persistent ones are cause for a "look see" by the old ophthalmologist! Best luck...I'm still knocking on wood...and doing a lot of praying. 73, Bill

I never did follow up on this.

Everything checked out fine and the Doc was proud of his handiwork. Next appointment in July. The chunky floaters, especially the one that looks like a doughnut, is beginning to fade. Now if you imagine sitting around the campfire and watching the atmosphere above the flames doing that wavy thing... I get a lot of that... with no campfire.

It get's a bit annoying.

And it makes me want to go camping.

Hello again Chief.
Glad to hear you're doing okay. So go camping!!! It'll cure what ails ya...maybe let you discover some more faults too...LOL
Yes, Oh the stories we could tell about light shows and weird things you can look right through that come and go. Only those who are so "blessed" could possibly understand, right?
Good luck...maybe we'll run into each other (figuratively speaking) someday. Who knows. I have a 3 to 4 month trip planned to start June 12th this year...up to New England then out west to visit daughters...then...who knows...no schedule, no itinerary after NE.
