Default New to forum

Hello to all. Saw link to this forum on FROG forum and thought this is what I've been looking for! I'm wanting to do more radio operating while camping but have not really found a portable setup that I thought would be very efficient and easy to setup and breakdown. So very interested what HF setups others are using. Thanks in advance.

Are you backpacking to your campsite? If you have a camper what time of camper and tow vehicle?

My station is part of my RV so setting up primarily consists of raising the antenna.

Default Thanks

Thanks for reply. I was beginning to think this forum had shut down! HA! No, not backpacking. I have a Flagstaff 29KSWS and tow with a F-250sd 6.7 powerstroke. Both are about a year old now. I would like to find a portable HF antenna setup that is not too conspicuous but also effective enough to bother with. I have tried the 2 hamsticks for each band used as a short dipole but not very efficient without getting it up in the air a ways, which is hard to do at campgrounds. So just wanting to pick others brains on what they are using for HF at camps.

Like the picture of the HW-101! That was my first true HF rig and I still have it setup in my vintage station desk in my shack.

Yeah I built one back in the day... still have it and it still works - complete with all the weird quirks like drifting in the middle of a QSO and so on...

I use screw drive antenna. I made a mount from a RV spare tire bracket welded a tube on it drop the 7' mast in (fits in the camper compartments) it a rase up the antena put the pin in done deal. My camper has an aluminum roof and the mast and antenna get grounded to the camper making a pretty good ground plane. Even does pretty good at night on 80 meters. The mount allows me to put surplus fiberglass poles in the socket and when I'm doing some thing like field day I put up my homemade dipole. It's made from the remains of an old 10 meter beam the elements slide inside one another and I can do 10,12,15,and 17. At 17 it's starting to get a bit long! The whole affair gets me up about 24'

Default Yet another new guy :-)

Wife and I will be headed to Maine for a 2nd trip “home” later this summer. Hoping to take the HF rig with us and CW from there. Planning to try out the new slingshot to get a line into the trees!
