Yep, it is definitely one of those things.....

Looks like an atoll.

It is not related to weather, but Ken is close...something to do with the ocean.

I believe 24 hours have elapsed. It's a false-color image of a submarine meteor impact crater.

Do you remember these?

When I was a kid, whenever there was a "carnival" at a church or school, they had these machines that you could stick a 5x7" piece of card stock into. The machine would spin the card while kids dribbled paint onto it.

Turns out something like this:

So, if it ain't a submarine impact crater, is it a submarine caldera? I didn't think it was a caldera because of the central cone; but it could be. Or did you mean to say it's a spun-card paint image? That, now, I doubt.

IT is, in fact, an undersea volcano, according to NOAA.

More interesting stuff here...

Atolls are formed by undersea volcanos

True, sort of -- corals have a bit to do with it too, usually -- but atolls are not themselves underseas. If it doesn't stick up above the sea, it isn't an atoll.

I was wrong, too, to call it a caldera. I've since learned that not every volcanic crater is a caldera. This, I think, is a crater that's not a caldera.

I guess the grand prize goes unrewarded this time.

Shucks.... I was not even close.

I thought an
atoll was one of those things you paid before crossing a bridge or getting on to a toll road.
