View Full Version : Drivin' to Dayton

That's what I'm doing, drivin' to Dayton for the Hamvention, from POrtland OR. I don't plan to return -- I had intended to live in Portland, but it rains too durn much. I'll return to Central Florida, or Dallas -- I have lived each place for periods of decades, and like them both very well.

Left Portland on 03 May, and now I'm in Twin Falls ID. Parked last night in a Flying J in La Grande OR, and now I'm in another Flying J in Twin Falls. These two are the lamest Flying Js I've ever seen -- the one last night had no special RV fuel lanes, no RV parking, and neither does this one -- and Twin Falls doesn't even have a restaurant.

I'm used to Flying Js in the Southeast that have special RV fuel lanes, special RV parking, a 24-hour restaurant, and so forth. Spoiled brat, that's me.

Twin Falls was windy today -- my approach was at aout 35 mph on I-84 because of 58 mph wind gusts -- that's the official figure -- that like to toy with my motor home. At one point I actually got passed by a tumbleweed! That's a first.

Tomorrow night I'll probably be in Wyoming. Way ahead of sked for Dayton, but I have places around there to bum around, and it gives me slack if I want to wander and sightsee along the way.

Who else is coming?

Carl...

Keep us posted, nothing beats a travel log.

Flying J went through a period of expansion by acquisition. I bet these two spots were some of the inferior chains they bought out.

Must be nice to say, "I don't like it here" and just pack up and leave.

Looking for the next installment.

Yup, that's why I bought the motor home and got out of the stick house.

It's about 6:00 am here. Gonna have some breakfast (leftover lasagna, microwaved), shower, then go to the local Wal-Mart after sunup for some supplies, and head out.

There's some stunning scenery on I-80 going east from Salt Lake City. Here's a merge of some photos from a rest area. That's my motor home and toad.

But I didn't like that dumpster, so a little computer magic took it out.

I do wish I had panned a little bit more level with the camera. Oh, well.

Love that area of the country. Sounds like your having a good trip!

In Kansas this evening. I changed my planned itinerary slightly to visit my honorary daughter & grandgirls in Choctaw OK. It adds 400 mi to the trip but is worth it.

Now that I'm out of the Pacific Northwest, places with signs that say Flying J are actually Flying J. You can park the rig, eat, spend the night, dump, fill, even do laundry -- almost like being in a campground, but no rent to pay.

I'm never there. I'm always here.

Right now, here is Choctaw, OK (easternmost suburb of OKC), where I'm visiting loved ones. I'll head to Dayton Monday morning probably.

Yesterday I bought 60 gallons of diesel in Choctaw for $3.499 per gallon. That's the lowest price I've seen anywhere.

I'm jealous...diesel is running $3.85 at the lowest point around here

On the other hand, today I paid $3.79 per gallon for propane. In Oregon I was paying $3.09; the vendor came to me in the RV park; and there was no delivery charge.

Well, are we there yet?

(I know, this question has already been asked...) :rabbit:

Yah, got to Dayton last week. Next destination is in one of the Carolinas. Hamvention was a blast, and WI5G and I preceded Hamvention by going to the US Air Force Museum on Thursday.

After the museum and Hamvention, neither of us could walk.

Right now I'm in WV in a welcome center just across the river from Ohio on I-77. Free wi-fi in this rest area, courtesy of the State of West Virginia. At the moment I'm enjoying the fastest Internet service I've found since getting out of the stick house and going full-time last December. Much different from Poor Farmers RV Park in Fletcher, OH, where the Internet was so slow as to be nearly unusable. Also there was no laundromat and no sewer hookup. Bummer.

I think I'll stay here in the Rest Area until some time tomorrow, and make cookies.

Cookies.......

Oatmeal cookies, specifically. Yum. I've been baking cookies for about three hours, and it's 1:30 am. Almost done -- I'll get to sleep about 3:00, then be lazy tomorrow.

Retirement is wonderful.
