Since it seems that all everyone wants to buy is a cheap - handheld radio, and the only thing people wants to talk about is cheap handheld radios, I will take a stab at going in the opposite direction.

The Kenwood TS 590 was released almost 4 years ago...
It is a all mode 100 watt SSB, CW, FM / 25 watt AM transceiver.
It features a built in antenna tuner that actually talks to you in CW.
It will tell you K - for a good match, and bad - if it is a bad match.
It will tune most any 50 ohm antenna system with less than a 10:1 match.

It features DSP technology including both upconversion and downconversion.
I would have to say that it is probably one of the easiest, most sophisticated radios you will ever own.
I have found it's tuner to be very sensitive and it's audio to have a lot of punch with the processor turned on - with the standard hand mic.

It features a display that includes a built in SWR / Watt meter.
Its very own sound card, no more messing around with Signalinks.
Two antenna ports, 3 memory frequencies for each band.
Programmable channels in memory.

Its built in Noise Blockers, Noise reduction, IF Filters, Notch filter is second to none.

The old adage - you can't work them unless you can hear them is the very precept that this radio was designed around.
With a very quiet receiver, it is enjoyable to listen to this transceiver, even in a very noisy environment.

Its size is small enough that I am half tempted to mount it to the dash of my next pick up truck and use it as a mobile and buy a second one for home use only.

Hello again, Matt -- I think that's your name -- it's been a while.

Interesting. I had not observed the tendency, or tendencies, you describe. Certainly there have been interesting and useful discussions of many base-station and mobile rigs here.

It features DSP technology including both upconversion and downconversion.

Also interesting. How does it use DSP for conversion? Certainly that is possible to do, but I hadn't known that anyone was doing it, and I thought I knew a couple reasons why.

I've never played with a TS-590S, but I have been pleased with every Kenwood I've owned, excepting only the famous Kenwood 741A/742A tribanders (I had four of these at one time) that suffered from keyboard maintainability problems because they retained the buttons with plastic foam that quickly rotted to powder, and one handheld that I was given because it's defective. Currently I own seven or eight Kenwood radios (only two are handhelds), and several Icoms (including 2m, 70cm, and aviation handhelds), and I like them too.

The defective Kenwood handheld (TH-F6) eats batteries (PB-42L) very fast and gets hand-burning hot doing so; otherwise it works OK. The other is a fancy model I don't remember, and works fine, but it's packed away somewhere in ts original box. Maybe I'll list in on eBay. I don't have occasion to use handhelds.

Welcome aboard fulltimers-47. Feel free to jump in and join the fun.

A point of etiquette however; you will notice from reading other posts in this forum we generally use plain English/grammar in posting. Makes it easier for our older members to read!!

Thanks. :radio:

Hello again, Matt -- I think that's your name -- it's been a while.

Actually Mr. Hams name is Jerry and he still avoids us here on Open Roads Radio.net. The original post is a year old. He is still an active member and may return.

But has not as of yet.

You commented that "All anyone wants to talk about is the cheap handhealds"

I think that because we are amazed they work as well as they do

The TS=590 or the TS-2000.. Well we expect them to work as advertised.

Dang -- I'm a mighty poor detective. Oh, well.
