It's been everywhere else and finally I got to pump some gas at a reasonable price the other morning on the way to work...

Saw it this afternoon for $1.97.:jitter:

Only in Georgia, Oklahoma, and probably Texas, I imagine.

I'm hoping to get Costco gas at about 2.20 on Saturday. I'll probably need 50 gallons. We are usually a bit higher in the Seattle area because of State taxes.

Then we'll see how we do as we head south.

Definitely not. I used to own (1) an airplane [1946 Rearwin/Commonwealth Skyranger], and (2) a 270-gallon airplane-fueling trailer that I built. Whenever I needed to refill the fueler, I always towed it up US 19 into Georgia because gas taxes, and therefore gas prices, were much lower. (My airplane was STC'd for unleaded automotive gasoline.)

in the last month or two we traveled from Maine to Colorado.

The prices ranged from around 2.30 down to 2.10's.

lowest I paid was 2.10 in Cheyenne, WY on Friday.

My son-in-law just paid 2.08 on Monday here in northern Colorado.

haven't seen anything below 2.00 yet across I-80 on our trip west.

We mostly stopped at flying J/ Pilot stations so I could get my 3 cent a gallon good Sam discount.

The "GAS BUDDY" app for your cell phone (and computer) can be your friend, but sometimes you have to get away from the interstate highway to get the better prices.
In many cases fuel prices are not set by the station management but by the oil jobber that supplies / owns the station and or fueling equipment.
In many cases the oil jobber can even change the prices remotely.
Price changes change relative to the price of a barrel of "Crude" and oil jobbers watch this closely.
Fuel prices will also often fluctuate relative to the day of the week, with the lowest price on Wednesday , the other days being just before the weekend to get the play crowd and the early part of the week to get the going back to work crowd.
I do have something of an inside track on this due to the nature of one of my sons work and the equipment and people he work's with.

gas buddy works really well on my iPhone, the windows tablet doesn't since it doesn't display the price on the map , u have to click each individual station.

I also use the Pilot gas station app on the iPhone , which covers both flying J and Pilot truck stops when I'm pulling the yet.

Thanks for the info on best days to buy, with as much gas as I use, that is helpful.

I paid 1.949 in Piedmont, AL coming back from a Rally. There some places a penny or two cheaper but I couldn't get into them with the TT on the back. Saw prices of 1.899 where DD lives in Magnolia (Houston) TX.

The above is not necessarily a nation-wide or even State-wide trend, it can vary from area to area depending a great deal on the price the jobber's pay from the refineries and the price of crude.
Having said that, it HAS been a noticeable trend in most all states and areas that I have spent any time in ,,,,watch for yourself .

I have noticed capitalism at work here in my home town, with prices going from $1.97 to $2.12.

The quality of the gas is apparently unrelated to the price. Exxon is at $1.97, with BP, QT and Racetrack all about $2.05 - 2.07. But you have a choice here. For the privilege of getting in and out quickly you will pay a little more. To get a good price you will wait in line. When I filled up at 5:15 a.m. most of the 16 pumps were in use at that early hour.

Except at the Marathon, no waiting and gas is $1.99. I did note my truck doesn't like Marathon. The idea I might have to walk 26.2 miles...

We don't see gas wars like they used to have in the OLD days (50's-60's). I remember filling the tank for 9 cents/gal. That didn't even cover the 11 cent/gal tax. Normal prices were <> 25cents. That little event only lasted about 1/2 hour and was only in one little neighborhood but if you were lucky you might catch a gas war once or twice a month. Now days there are few independent dealers so the stations don't go for the bait.

Remember when the pumps were out in the weather with no shelter over them? :rain:

Then somebody thought people might buy gas in the rain if they had a shelter. And they did buy gas in the rain, and for a few pennies more, too. And they liked the shelter in the blistering heat, the snow, and at night, too.

Now that guy, who finally saw the obvious, was a marketing genius.

We still have one gas station here with no shelter. But only one.

I have one at 1.789 on my phone (posted it a while ago) I can do 1.729 today if I wish (But I'm using some discount points to get there) 2.079 on the big sign out front.

I paid 2.049 yesterday.

Fuel prices maybe down, but it i sure not good for the oil industry. Lay-offs are a common occurrence in all of the oil related states.
