Hi Andy.. Mark and I made contact. We were very light. Only about 40% copy. I hear a QRP station in Raleigh, NC.
Tony, KC5PXW, said I just missed you. Had a S-7 on him and he was running only 4 or 5 watts. He gave you a call for me but guess you had already gone. Sorry.
We will try it again.

Sorry I missed seeing this until now. I was surprised when I made a couple of contacts on 17M Friday afternoon. One was in NW Oregon. He was running 200 watts and a rhombic antenna. I was using my 100 watt and the Carolina Windom 80 at 50' in the air.

I missed it.
Earlier this week somebody pulled out in front of Matt (aka Atlas) and ruined his little Ranger pickup. Tragic in that is was paid for and got 24 mpg. So today we went truck shopping and found a really clean 2001 F-150 that he really likes. Then we went to strip all the stuff out of the wreck. By then we were hungry and it was 4:30.
Maybe next time.

Hey Guys,
To be honest we had no plans for setting up a "net", but that ain't a bad idea. I'm glad I thought of that !!!
Mark, Andy and I were just setting up a schedule to see if we could make contact and get acquainted on the air. I can talk much faster than I type. We had tried it last weekend and tried to coordinate it via e-mail. I decided I would post it on ORR, incase others wanted to join. I don't know if 40 meters is the proper band. Conditions are sure strange as of late. I felt sure 40 meters would work for Mark (Miami) and I and knew it would probably be a stretch for Andy (CT). I just chose 7230 because that is where the RV Service Net meets and I think a lot of RV'ers and mobiles hang out around that freq. Thoughts were, if we could get a discussion going, we could spread the word about ORR a little more as well.
At 1 PM ET I heard Mark maybe once, but way down in the noise. I could hear a lot of stations (Q-5) to the north (Tennessee and Virginia areas). On the 4 PM ET attempt, I could hear Texas, Tennessee and up into Virginia. I could barely hear Mark down in Miami. Signals to the south of me didn't compare to the signals I was receiving from the north and the west. I worked that one guy in Raleigh, NC without a hitch and he was only running 4 or 5 watts. If Andy had not skipped out to go eat with friends I think we could possible have worked. I think Andy will "throw you down the well where food is involved".:D Texas was coming in good and could have probably worked you OK Ken. I know without a doubt it would have been a pipeline to the Atlanta area Wade.
I don't know anything about 17 meters, never even been on that band. I'm game though lets start setting up some skeds and see if we can get to know each other on the air. There are a number of ORR members out west, I'll load something up to work 20 or another band to get out there.
Got any ideas or sked times ? Post 'em up on the board and I'll try to work around things to make the contacts and get acquainted. Ken and others on ORR, we can do this several times a week. Whatever is convenient for you. Just post a message with a day, time and freq and I (and others I'm sure) will try to make it. A few of us have a little time on our hands. We are fortunate enough that we don't have to punch a clock anymore, at least not righ now.:)
Wade, sorry to hear about Matt's accident. I assume he was not injured from the way you spoke. That's a bummer. My son has a little '95 Ranger that we bought new. Great little trucks. I know Matt's going to miss his but, that F150 is just a step up.
Got to get out of here and get ready for Church. I'll be checking back and looking for schedules from anywhere.

I missed the posts on the attempt today. Think its a great idea to attempt to form a net. Seems to me that it would be great to meet and perhaps talk about some of the subjects on the thread and get to know fellow HAMRVers. Seems to me that it would probably need to move toward a directed net given propigation conditions etc. Given the number of nets on in the mornings, miight be best at noon or early afternoon 1300 EST. Anyway. Sorry I didnt get to hook up with you Jim and look forward to working everyone on the air.

Ken,
How high was your noise level ? You recall ? Did you have a high noise level or was I just that weak ?:fuss:
TXiceman
01-11-2009, 09:41 PM
Noise level was about an S3 or 4 here. You were weak and back in the noise. I could not even hear you on the vertical (ground mounted Butternut HF9V). The dipole is a Carolina Windom 80 Special, 50' up in the pine trees. I was running about 110 watts, and the dipole is roughly N-S oriented.
We'll have to try when the band conditions are a bit better.
Ken

01-11-2009, 11:56 PM
I was running about 110 watts as well Ken. I was loading a 75 meter inverted "V" with the apex at about 30 ft. It's broadsided in your direction.
Not sure if I will be around next weekend. But, we need to try some 20 and maybe 17 meters. I'll probably skip over Mark but could possibly work you and Andy.
I read an old thread on iRV2 where you had tried to get a group together there. I think a storm came through and found no further comments on it.
40 and 80 meters has been unusual lately. I think I'll be in the rv next weekend for about a weeks trip near here.

I'm sure Wade will be reading this and that's a good idea Andy. We can keep the thread going until we get things ironed out. We need him to change the announcement at the top of the login page too. I'd hate for someone to be waiting around and become discouraged. Maybe he can put something up there to call attention to this thread ?
I see Mark online now. It's almost 11 AM his time. I don't know what hours he works. I'm ready to start exploring 20 and 17 meters Andy, what do you think ? That might work during the day for some of us.
I was thinking on the weekends we could set up a sked where we were on 20 or 17 at a certain time and on 40 or 80 at a different time.
We'll be getting the camper ready for a weeks trip up to Bonifay, FL. 'Cilla and I have to help her Mom with a few things next week and we're just going to take the RV up to a new campground up there. May even do a little workcamping at this new place.
Send me a post for a sked that is convenient for you today. Later this afternoon maybe and I'll try to make it. Let's sked a 20 or 17 mtr freq OK ?

Our local club has a net on Mondays at 2000 CST on 10 M and then shifts to 80 M after that. Always welcome to join in. Check the schedule and frequencies at www.w5nc.org.

Well, we're still here at Florida Springs in Bonifay, FL. We stuck around another day or two. Finished our projects up for my DW's mother.
I got the ham gear set up. The only band I've been on is 75 meters a couple of times to check into nets. I got in, but my signal reports were not too good on 75 meters. Probably would do better on higher bands.
I'm glad there are no snow banks blocking my way out. Temps have warmed to the low 70's. Sorry, I just had to say that Andy !!!

Hey Guys - We need to get on AOL's messenger program (I think it's called AIM) or Windows Messenger when on like we were today. The chat or text exchange would be much quicker than going through the forum. One of those pgms or possibly both of them allows you to open a secure chat room for multiple people. I can't remember, it's been so long since I've used one of them. Which one will suite our purposes better ? Once we decide which one to use, we can post our user names and be ready to go. Just my thoughts ? What do you think ?
=========
I just noticed on the Profile Page of each user, under the Contact Info Tab, there is a place provided for instant messenger type info. I've got my "Skype" account listed there, although I hardly use it.

If you like getting up in the morning I sometimes check into the Breakfast club (Usually between 7 and 8 am Eastern for me) 3973 KHz
It is fun on that band. This morning I'm not (yet) having any issues hearing NCS, who is in Mo. But I expect him to fade shortly (It's 8am Eastern, I'm in Michigan)
The other day Dave, some fifty miles (if that) from me was NCS during this hour, and I could not hear him at all. Heard zero's and fours and all sorts of other zones but Dave.. Long about 7:50 am he went from RS 00 to 11, 21, 22, .. 5x9 and I completed the check in just like that.
In the evening (4-5 eastern) I check into the Wolverine SSB net on 3935Khz. The pre-net is "Chaos" format, no NCS, just a list taker (Sometimes me) and you just jump in, ID every 10 minutes and that's the only "Formal" Very "party line" type chat.
The 'Formal" net (With an NCS and wait your turn) is currently at 5 pm eastern or there about. When band conditions change we will go back to Pre-net at 5pm formal at 6, NOTE: we tend to follow UTC for that net (Meaning we switch about the same time we switch to/from Dumb Stupid Time (DST) so the pre-net is 2100 zulu and the formal net 2200 Depending on the net this one works the other way.. Stations here in Michigan are like Bo-Derrek aging 9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1-is he even transmitting. as the band goes LONG http://www.wssbn.com for more info on that net
The rest of the time.. In the winter.. Well. Here in the motor home only the radio room, Which measures 42" by 50" (less cabinets) is heated, currently 100 watts full time 150 when I sit down and 1000/1500 if needed (When I'm here) NO plumbing (Well, plumbing but no water) so I only come out for the nets and the occasional visit on a nice day (Today?) to scan the digital portion of the bands.
Come summer I'll be out here more often as we have found that with membership camping If I pull out and drive 70 miles (about 10 gallon of gas each way) I can park the rig, toss the wire up in the trees and get free, Electric, cable TV and Internet (All the comforts of home) and spend perhaps 10 bucks on Propane, currently 40 on gas, and save over 100 on electricity for the house (Since I"m not using much) every 2 weeks camping.
We plan on doing a lot of camping

I've listened to the Breakfast Club several times recently. I've not heard you. Probably because I'm in and out of the room or wife and I are chatting back and forth. I can hear most of the stations that time of the morning Q5. Seems like a good group of guys.
XYL is going out-of-town with daughter most of the day today. I'll be in and out if anyone wants to make a contact or I should say attempt a contact.

First AOL-IM NOTE that on community.compuserve.com in a few forums I have moderator powers.. You can use your AOL-IM user name and password there and it will work. Try http://community.compuserve.com/pchardware
Second I use Trillian, it combines AOL-IM, Yahoo-IM, ICQ and at least one other all in one user interface.. It does not have all the features but it does have the ones I need.
Next: 4am.. Well I will admit today I'm on the Breakfast club early (Check the posting time on this message) Wife snores and I was a bit hypoglycemic so I grabbed a couple slices of toast, an apple my coat and boots and here I am.. In the ham shack.
I only come out here in the mornings a couple of times a week, usually 7-8 AM just as the band goes short.

Hi Mike
I just got home here but 7230 has my rig pegged out with broadcast here at my RV. In any case, one suggestion is to try checking into the RV Service Net that meets daily on 7230 from 700am to 800am. 40 Meters still seems to be kind of long propogation wise for those of us on the East Coast anyway. It looks to me at this point in the cycle at least East Coast USA the best bet would be between 1000am and 200pm sometime. Kind of leaves the weekend only as a good time for the folks that are not retired. But I think several of the OOR members trying to meet for an on the air are available weekdays. Anyway, we will keep trying. I am sure you are enyoying the TS2K.

It was a good QSO, plus I got to "road test" my new 80 M Ladder line fed Dipole on 40M.
I thought the QSO was around 12:30-1:00 EST (hey, I'm retired) but I didn't write down the time! Anyway, it was a good "old time" RagChew and I learned I had missed that! Thanks for the FB QSO Jim!
I will be out and about some today, gonna exercise the MH, and fill it up with fuel while I am out. Tomorrow I hope to take it "dry" camping for a few nights at a local State park. It's too early in the season to de-winterize! On the other hand the wx is mild enough to go RVing!
If I am home around noon or so, I will have the rig on 7230!

Wow !!! The new dx spotter makes it quick and easy. Andy and I were on the spotter this morning, went to 75 meters then to 40. One freq was busy so Andy sent another and BINGO !! We were there. Condix were terrible and could not make a good contact but we could hear each other. We were going on to 20 meters but ran out of time.
I've been logged onto it all day but marked as "away", when not around. You can turn the speaker volume up when not in the room and hopefully hear someone when they log on. You do not have to log into the forum first if you prefer not to, you can bookmark the spotter site and login from there.
The dx spotter is the "cat's meow" !! Thanks again Mike.

Hi Gentlemen,
I got my new Double Bazooka up for 75/80 meters. I can tell a huge difference on receive. Much better signals than before. I cut the old antenna down for 40 meters and it's working great. Don't even have to use the tuner in the line while in the phone portion of the band. I think I'm going to try building a Double Bazooka for 40. Have any of you guys used one ? I am impressed. This one works so well I may just buy one for 40, it will be awhile before I have time to build one.
I have a small program that computes the length of coax and end terminations for a Double Bazooka if anyone is interested. It is small enough it can be attached to an e-mail.
I'm going fishing this morning, I'll be back by 1300 hours CDT. If someone would like to set up a sked during the afternoon post a time. I'll meet you on the DX Spotter and we will go from there. With the DX Spotter online now, we can get things together quickly.
Thanks and have a great weekend everyone.

Good evening from the tiniest state !
Next week on June 15 or 16 I'm heading to FL vis Cincinnati to collect 2 younger brothers to visit our Dad in FL. The IC706 & hustler antenna are ready to be tested. It's highly unlikely that there will be any playing radio while moving, but will certainly get on air (7.230 +/-) of course while camping.
If all goes as somewhat planned, will be back in RI around June24 or 25....sheesh, and FD is here!
The XYL getsto work, so my travelling companion will be one of the pups untill we meet the siblings.
Hope to make a few QSO's along the way and will definitely do qrp CW, 7030 or 7040 while at campsite.
