Don't forget the third wire (safety ground) in an outlet. It may be what you need - and maybe not.
You can find out whether that copper pipe is grounded by measuring the resistance between it and the safety ground. First, though, measure
voltage between them, just to be sure you won't zap the ohmmeter if the outlet is miswired, which sometimes it is..
