Growing up on the farm we had no electricity, running water or a furnace. There was a stove in the Parlor that if you banked the coals good enough would heat up pretty fast in the morning. I know it was cold enough in the bedroom to freeze the liquid in the "Thunder Mug" (chamber pot), so 53deg would have been a heat wave. My dad got up about 4am to go feed the livestock and milk the cows. (That's why I don't farm). So when he got up he stoked the fire and added some coal to get it nice and warm in the Parlor so we would get dressed around the stove to keep warm.
