I'm not into your hobby, but I do know one great location for camping and near zero light polution and that's Big Bend National Park. You know what they say, "The stars at night are very bright, deep in the heart of Texas."

Both the camps at Rio Grande Village and Cottonwood (boondocking only) should give you what you need.
