52 is still active, but you have to be in the right place at the right time. In my travels, I have talked to lots of hams on 52. We would usually QSY to another freq. to keep 52 open for contacts. It is a calling channel.

Years ago, I used to run between the Dallas area and the Houston area quite often. About half way, there was a rancher that monitored 52 and I would talk to him almost every trip. Helped fill in the time. His beam reached quite a way up and down interstate 45. I can't remember his call, been awhile. I probably couldn't remember it now even if I heard it 10 minutes ago (Hi Hi)

I always monitor 52 when on the road. I also have a dedicated radio for that purpose.
