Given the state of the art today in weather warning and prediction.. I often wonder about death tolls from tornados.

I recall back in, I the 1960's we had a string of storms hit not far from where I live (In fact way way too close to where I live.. RULE If you can see the tornado.. YOU ARE TOO CLOSE!!!!)

That one killed people.. Shortly after SKYWARN was formed in my county, and we found ourself taking classes and dusting off radios that had not seen much use. The death toll went down. Today it is not uncommon to see thousands and thousands of dollars in property damage.. And no injuries.

There is a story (Ask your weather service for the details) of a factory, I believe it was in Ohio but I'm not sure. The owner of the shop had taken weather training (in fact he now "Stars" in one of the NOAA videos, Not all of the training took, however he did survive uninjured,, got some good video of the approaching storm though) He installed a weather/all Hazards alert radio in his plant and when the alert went off, They shut down, and headed for the storm shelter.

When the all clear sounded they came out of the shelter and found......Nothing

No plant

No machine

No car (Just an engine)

No ... Anything

Also no dead bodies
No injuries
and .... major problems

The plant has since been rebuilt, the machines and materials in the plant replaced, the cars of the workers were replaced. I mean that's why we have insurance.

But the one thing that could not be replaced (The lives of the workers) did not need replacement.. And that. is indeed a very good thing.

Some states feel they don't need no alert system

Sure they don't.

I have seen too many storms where one state, no sirens, no alerts, many dead

A few feet away, I DO MEAN FEET on the other side of a state line, They had alerts, they had sirens, what did they not have..... Funerals of course cause nobody died
