starboard is to rudder
As I understand the origin of the word "Starboard" it comes from the words 'steer board' which predated rudders as we know them. You'd park your boat with the 'port' side toward the dock (the port as it were) because the steer board stuck out the other side, not the back like a modern rudder, preventing tying up to the dock. So one side became port, and the other steer board.
OK navy guys...am I right on this one??
