Speaking of nickels, dimes and shorting out, our old (now retired) Maytag dryer would short out the heating element if coins were left in your pockets and wound up in the dryer. There was a little space, about 1/2 inch, at the front of the drum right at the door. If coins fell down in there, there was a good change they'd short between the element and the metal frame of the dryer.

And once shorted, it would then burn itself open.

The most I ever made fixing the dryer was about 85 cents.
