Default State Parks and NOAA SAME Alerts

As a volunteer net control operator for the National Weather Service here in Peachtree City, GA. (WX4PTC) and the fact that our service area of North Georgia is taking a real weather pounding as I type this in, I thought I'd post another great reason to keep a NOAA weather radio with SAME technology in the RV at all times.

Wheh a warning is posted, they first give the county names of the areas affected, and then they say "Areas in the path of this storm include..." and then they give specific city, town, community names of where the storm is headed.

And just this weekend I have noticed they now include the names of state parks and recreation areas. Now I've heard a lot of these warnings and broadcast a few myself and I have not heard this before. I did make the suggestion to the warning co-ordinator the last time we had a training session.

If your local NWS office isn't doing this, call them up, ask to speak to the warning co-ordinator and politely suggest that they do.

I have never heard a state park mentioned, but that's a great idea.

That is a good idea.
Any suggestions as to which weather alert radio is better?

Not really. But I would look for several features:

1. First and formost is the SAME alert feature. Set the FIPS code to default of 999999 and it will alert to any warning it hears regardless of the area. Great for RV travel that way.

2. Get one that has the 12vdc wall wart. Then you can run the thing off the 12vdc system in your RV, after you make up your own cable.

3. Get one with an external antenna port, this can be fed from your rooftop TV antenna. The NOAA frequencies are near TV channel 5 so that system will pass them just fine.

I have a Midland that does all this. I have a Radio Shack for the house that doesn't have the 12vdc or ext. antenna, but that's OK, it's for the house. Google "NOAA weather radio" and all sorts of stuff come up.

By the way, the Canadian system is exactly like ours, your wx radio will work in Canada, too.
