Default Aviation buffs try this one...

I found this photo of two famous people.

They appeared to be standing in front of some sort of aircraft with Delta Air Lines livery (paint scheme). So the boys at work got busy and figured out not only what kind of aircraft this is, but also where in relation to the aircraft they are standing.

Can you? (Yes you can use Google or any other source)

It's Billy Graham and Martin Luther King Jr (I think). Still trying to figure out the location of the plane...

Ok... This was really bugging me. So I had to look hard for it. I think I know the plane, the model number and the location.

I already answered the who, so should I answer the rest of the question?

Wanna bet? Although I admit you've planted a doubt.

We also toured the Evergreen Aviation Museum in McMinnville, OR while on vacation. It houses the Spruce Goose.

Was a beautiful facility. I highly recommend a visit. I was however disappointed with the Spruce Goose as they charged an extra $50.00 per person to take a tour of the flight deck. We did however pay an extra $10.00 for the whole family to have a guided tour of a B24 by a veteran which was awesome.

If you get a chance go see it. I was surprised at the quality and quantity of the aircraft on display. They also had a separate building for Space.

OK Carl:

I came up with Convair model 880 standing in front of the engine cowling.

By golly, you could be right, but still I doubt. The timing (1960 or so) makes more sense for a CV880 than for a Gooney Bird. But if that's an engine nacelle, the strut on which it's mounted looks (probably) curved to me, and on a CV880 it would be straight. I did find photos of a Delta CV880 with the nacelle painted just like the photo, though.

Sorry Carl, it's not a DC-3. I did enjoy the videos, though.

Answers Friday evening! Hang on!

And the winner is: Convair 880, standing at engine #2, (possibly #1)

Note the triangle shaped 'shadow' over Billy Grahams shoulder, and another at the top pf the picture, those are air vents that can clearly be seen on the engine nacelles in this picture.

Borrowed it from http://psa188.tripod.com/ which has a boatload of old aircraft photos.

I sure didn't figure it out on my own. There is a guy at work who is 2nd generation Delta, and his father worked on the CV880 back in the day (as did my father). His father however, was so taken by this airplane he has a huge painting of one in his den. So this fellow recognized the engine, went to his dads house to confirm it, and figured out the mystery.

I knew it had to be a plane that had underhung engines. I just started looking at vintage aircraft that Delta flew and saw a picture of the plane with the same paint scheme...just luck.
