Default Bandpass Filter Question

So I did a little research into bandpass filters and in theory, they can be built with resistors and capacitors. However, all the kits I ever see have toroids you have to wind. Reason I'm wondering is I want to make some 40m transceivers that use SMDs without being better at receiving broadcast AM stations. Toroids are big and ugly.

Can an effective 40m bandpass filter be made without toroids?

Thanks!
