Upcoming Trip for us
The wife and I have been talking and we're ready to go again. We're going to wait and see what Tropical Storm Beryle is going to do and most likely head down to Old Town, Florida. Actually about 9 miles south of Old Town, to Yellow Jacket RV Resort, on the Suwannee River. We've been there several times before and it's a nice place to kick back and relax. It's about a four hour drive from home.
The campground is 9 miles from Old Town. If you're familiar with Old Town, there's not much there. A couple of gas stations, a barber shop and a couple of sandwich shops. The closest Walmart is 22 miles from the campgrounds, down at Chiefland. You need to take what you need.
Since it's only 4 hours, we are considering taking our boat also. Instead of pulling the Jeep behind the motorhome, I'll pull the boat and the wife can follow me in the Jeep. Everytime we've been down there we've wanted to explore the river. We are told there are many springs along the river that are beautiful and very clear. Most are only accessible by boat. It might be a lot of fun. Other then boat riding, it's a good place to kick back, read and do some outdoor cooking experimentation. Almost the entire campground is covered by a canopy of large water oaks. If we head that way, I'll try to get plenty of photos. The best I remember they have very good wifi, only a few local TV channels and you have to walk down by the river to be able to use the cell phones.
Anyone wish to tag along?

I would, if I were in the vicinity (I'm in NC at the moment). I've been through Old Town a couple times, and through nearby Mayo and Branford many times, traveling from Tallahassee to Gainesville via US27. Nice area.

Where are ya in NC right now Carl. We've spent a lot of time in the Franklin area.
Yes, the Old Town area is nice, kinda laid back, not much seems to happen there. We've stayed on the Suwannee River and Sante Fe several times. Some very nice campgrounds along those streams. Those big oak trees with the hanging moss are what the original Florida once was. The true Florida.

I'm in Matthews NC (on the SE side of Charlotte). This weekend I'll head to Goose Creek SC (just north of Charleston) for recurrent training to renew my Judo coaching certification. Then back to Matthews for The Greatest Camp On Earth, North America's largest annual Judo training camp (three days in June; I'm a minor director of Camp and usually spend most of my time at Camp sitting on promotion boards). After Camp, I'll probably head for central FL or for the Dallas area. Who plans that far ahead?

That judo stuff reminds me of a story Paul Harvey told.
Seems there was a 15 passenger van that pulled into a gas station along the interstate about 3 am. As the van was being fueled, a couple of "bad guys" noted the van was fully loaded with nothing but cute, giggly college girls.
I guess they figured they'd rob the whole crew, steal the van and take a couple of the girls along for some fun. But the girls had other plans.
See, they were a college judo team, returning from a competition that they had just won.
So when the cops showed up, you had these two social deviants begging for the safety of the police car. And some medical attention.

I don't know about the giggly girls, but several years ago the Judo team from Florida International University (males & females) was in California. The head instructor, Nestor Bustillo, was driving the rented van and stopped in a gas station. An upstanding local citizen walked up to the driver's window and attempted to carjack the van. The whole team, except Nestor, came boiling out of the van, pinned him, applied armbars and chokes, and held him for the cops.
I read about it in the newspapers and later asked Nestor about it at a Florida tournament, and he verified that the story was true. Here's a link:

Every now and then, justice is served. Last week a husband and wife went to their beach house in Galveston. As they entered, they were met by a gun wielding thug that demanded to know what they were doing in his house. Bad mistake for the thug. The husband and wife were Houston police officers. They pulled their service weapons and killed the POS.

Carl...
That may be the same incident that Paul Harvey was referring to. It's been awhile since I have heard him tell it.
Having read the article there were "facts" from the Harvey version omitted and others added in. Harvey never mentioned the $1.2 Million bail, which I think is about right.
The point being, he had it coming to him.

Well we put the trip off for a few weeks. Have a lot of things coming up and need to get caught up around the house. Will do it later.
