My memorable moment was July 20, 1969 when Apollo 8 landed on the moon.
That was my 13th birthday. I was worried because they kept messing around and not getting out of the LEM, I thought midnight would come and go and they would miss my birthday for having actually set foot on the moon.
And that nearly happened. The flight plan called for a rest period, or a "nap" just after a landing checklist was complete and they knew it was safe to stay on the moon. The astronauts called down they wanted to go, and the flight surgeon realized there was no way these guys were going to be taking any kind of nap so he signed off on it and out they went.
With only an hour or so of my birthday left.
And that was Apollo 11. Apollo 8 was the first to orbit the moon.
