The only way to use emoticons is to either click the "go to advanced" button and select them, or remember the "text to be replaced" for the ones you like and type that in manually. I tried to keep the names simple and easy to remember just for that reason. For example
poke gets you 
bleh gets you 
think gets you
The format is :smiley: where the name is between two colons.
