Hello Everyone

I am a new Extra Class Ham with a limited equipment inventory. Lots of experience in electronics and Public Service radio. I learned electronics in the Navy when tubes glowed and transitors were a laboratory experment.

I am here to continue to learn, especially mobile systems as pertains to RV applications. We travel in a fifth wheel towed by a Ford F-250 7.3L diesel with a manual 5 speed tranny.

My dream ham rig is a IC-7000 driving a screwdriver antenna on the HF end.

I am short on knowledge of veritical antennas and mobile applications.

Welcome aboard Jim! You'll find a great bunch of people here with varied interests. I'm sure any info you can provide will be appreciated. The dream rig sounds good, I assume the screwdriver is for mobile work. The 4-el SteppIR would be my choice for a base antenna.

Welcome and you will get lots of info and feedback here. Great to have you. I am working right now away from my home QTH and am full timing out of my RV which is located near Homestead, FL. I run a Kenwood TS2000 and a Tarheel that I have located on the hitch mount of the RV. Had about 150 QSOs from here over the last year or so and been able to work about 25 DX entities if you are into that. THe Tarheel is very well made and I have had it on my Pickup Truck also -- Very good luck with it. Also have the Capacitance Hat on it which helps on the Low Bands. I even worked into Texas on 6 Meters from here in the RV with it. Good Luck and let us know how you are doing

Welcome to ORR Jim. Diagonally across this great country, you and Mark (W3ZI) are about as far as you can get. Sounds to me like you will fit in well here. I hope you will enjoy the forum as much as I.

I'm near Panama City, FL. The XYL and I are both retired and enjoy RV'ing every chance we get. We also have a 5th wheel and use an F250 for towing.

Glad to have you onboard. Do not be afraid to jump right in and enjoy the fun. Lot's of good guys in here.

Welcome aboard Jim. I'm just a weekend camper, and go in a 1977 Class C Ford. All I have so far for it is 2M (an old Kenwood TM-241A), but plan to move up to a 5th wheel when DW retires. I am home on disability. At home I run a Kenwood TS-680S into an MFJ-1798 Vertical (that presently has some wind damage). Planning to put up a G5RV in the spring. Anyway welcome. You find lots of help and fune here.

Hi Jim,

I see you are a shellback, I was supposed to cross in my one and only Wes-pac but things changed and we didn't cross. So I am still a wog.

I enlisted in the Navy in 1/1975, after a hitch in the Army. I was an Interior Communications Electrician. IC-man. They taught us tubes and told us they weren't being used in the fleet anymore. The Ship I was on, the U.S.S. Meyerkord, a 12 year old knox class distroyer escort when I reported aboard, had tube type amplifiers in every engineering space. So much for no tubes.

I am a Technician class I have an IC-746 PRO and love it. I am currently working to upgrade this year. Currently I only do 2 meter in the Motorhome.

I am fulltimer and operate 100% mobile. My station is the IC-7000 with the Little Tarheel II screwdriver antenna for HF and a Ku4ab squalo antenna for 6 meters. Very happy witht he IC7000 although the menu system is kinda intense. I use the screwdriver antenna with a turbo tuner and it works ok. I am still working on a good counterpoise for the antenna as my RV is a Winnebago 35' adventurer with fiberglass roof. I have tried the screwdriver on the rear ladder and now have it mounted over the drivers door where it can fasten into the front steel superstructure. My SWR is great, Actual RF radiation is still lacking in my opinion, so I am getting ready to try different counterpoise schemes with Marine deck counterpoise tape.

I too come from a commspec backround and worked with some of the big boxes with lotsa toobes and things to tune. Been licensed since '59 an extra since the 80's. Presently in Canyon Lake Tx and will be heading to Southpark Co CO in May. Good luck in the hobby!

Well, Jim, you are in the right place! I'm still trying to figure out the best portable antenna systems myself!

Ask lot's of questions and you'll get lots of answers here. Some of them might be right!
